Uterine Fibroids Q & A

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are benign muscular tumors that can grow inside and on your uterus. They’re very rarely cancerous, and range in size from as small as seedlings to large enough to distort the shape of your uterus.

Uterine fibroids also vary in terms of shape and location. While many are found inside the uterus, they are also seen along the uterine wall and on the outside of the uterus.

Which uterine fibroids symptoms should I look out for?

In most cases, women have no idea they suffer from uterine fibroids until the benign growths are discovered during an ultrasound and pelvic exam. However, the most common warning signs of uterine fibroids include:

  • Painful periods
  • Heavy bleeding during menstruation
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Frequent urination
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Infertility
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Miscarriage

If you experience any of the above symptoms, talk to your Ocean Obstetric & Gynecologic Associates health care provider right away.

What causes uterine fibroids?

Medical experts aren’t entirely sure what causes uterine fibroids, but they do believe genetics and hormones play a role. When hormone production slows down, uterine fibroids tend to shrink in size.

How are uterine fibroids treated?

While uterine fibroids typically aren’t a cause for concern, there are many treatment options to choose from.

Medications

Hormonal medications that regulate your menstrual cycle, including gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) agonists and progestin-releasing intrauterine devices (IUD) can shrink the size of uterine fibroids. There are also non-hormonal options, such as tranexamic acid (Lysteda).

Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE)

UAE is a procedure which can be performed by an interventional radiologist during which the uterine arteries are occluded and therefore decreasing the blood flow to the fibroids and therefore shrinking them. If you have interest in this procedure, please feel free to talk with any of the doctors at Ocean Ob/Gyn Associates for more information.

Minimally invasive procedures

There are several minimally invasive procedures your health care provider may recommend depending on the size and location of your uterine fibroids.

Surgery

An abdominal myomectomy is a surgical procedure in which your uterine fibroids are physically removed from your uterus. This procedure is typically recommended for patients who are looking to preserve their fertility or do not want to have a hysterectomy.
