An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency soundwaves to create images that show the inside of your body. They are used to monitor the development of a fetus, as well as check for problems with the abdomen, liver, kidneys, or heart.
An ultrasound scan is used for many reasons, including to:
An ultrasound is an extremely safe procedure with no known risks. While it is an effective medical tool, ultrasound technology doesn’t travel well through gas or bone, so these scans are not typically used to view the bones, lungs, or head.
Once you are prepared for your ultrasound, a licensed technician or physician applies a gel over the area being examined. A transducer, a hand-held medical device, is then placed over the area or inserted into your vagina.
The type of ultrasound you are given depends on the area being examined. Ultrasound scans are entirely painless. In total, your scan should take no longer than an hour.
Shortly after the scan, a physician interprets your results to check for any abnormalities. If your results are normal, you can immediately return to your day-to-day activities. If there are any abnormal results, you may be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment.
The Ocean Obstetric & Gynecologic Associates team has the experience and medical technology to make your ultrasound as quick and comfortable as possible. To schedule an ultrasound, call or book an appointment online today.
