  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Spotting
  • Hip and back pain (later in pregnancy)

What can I expect from my pregnancy?

Your pregnancy breaks down into three trimesters, in which your baby hits exciting new milestones.

First trimester (weeks 1 to 12)

During the first trimester, your baby’s spinal cord, brain, and other organs begin to develop in the womb. Your baby’s heart also starts beating just a few weeks after you conceive. While you may not experience noticeable weight gain, back pain, or heartburn throughout these first few weeks of pregnancy, the risk of morning sickness, as well as miscarriage, is higher during this time.

Second trimester (weeks 13 to 27)

In your second trimester, your Ocean Obstetric & Gynecologic Associates doctor performs ultrasound scans to check on your baby’s anatomical development. They look for any potential developmental abnormalities and may also tell the sex of your baby if you wanted to know.

Third trimester (weeks 13 to 40)

The final stretch of pregnancy is often the most exciting and least comfortable of your 40 weeks. During this time, your weight gain begins to accelerate rapidly compared to your first two trimesters, increasing your risk of pregnancy symptoms like heartburn, back pain, hip pain, and insomnia. As your due date approaches, you may experience swelling and pelvic discomfort. Your baby’s bones are fully formed during this time, and they can also open and close their eyes.

How does my doctor monitor my pregnancy?

The Ocean Obstetric & Gynecologic Associates team is available to answer all your pregnancy-related questions and help create an individualized prenatal care plan for you that includes:

  • Routine visits
  • Regular ultrasound scans and tests
  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Diet and lifestyle changes
  • Exercise routine appropriate for each individual patient

If you are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, your health care provider creates a pregnancy and birth plan that best suits your unique needs, ensuring you and your baby remain as healthy as possible throughout your pregnancy, labor, and birth.

The team is affiliated with Monmouth Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center in New Jersey, offering their high-risk patients two convenient options to deliver.
